Convert your battery grinder to USB PART 2: Upgraded motor and switch

Part 1 the original guide found here
The original guide shows you how to essentially convert your grinder to USB power and therefore this guide will not cover that again.

Upgrading the USB grinder

I have had many emails and messages asking "how to make the grinder better?"

Well the answer is pretty simple here and if you have already converted your grinder to USB following Part 1 then you are more than capable of the following modifications to increase the speed and power of your grinder. laugh

The original switch and wiring

The original stock switch which we used is a bit of a mess on for some and has often broken after lots of use, Serpantoid just wrote a blog how to simply direct wire the grinder so there is no switch at all (plug in too use, out for off) but I can't be bothered with all that.

I simply removed the stock switch and put a round flat toggle switch in line of the positive wire to the motor creating a more permanent durable switch which is still yet to fail me smile

A better faster motor laugh

  • Manufacturers Technical Data...

Rated voltage: 1.5 To 4.5V DC
       No load current: 0.34A max.
       No load speed: 15,000rpm ± 15%
       Rated load: 10.0 g.cm
       Rated load current: 1.17A max.
       Rated load speed: 12,200rpm ± 12%
       Weight: 19g approx

  • The original stock motor shown in the left blue grinder is pitiful really, it does the job and nothing more. Also take into account the original motor is designed for use on weed already semi picked by yourself before putting the weed into the grinder.

The red grinder on the right has a 15000 RPM - Scalextric / Hornby intended motor ordered from Ebay for just £4 including postage and packing!

  • Motor part number: R641073

  • Motor dimensions:
       Length excluding shaft: 25mm
       Diameter: 21mm
       Shaft length: 10mm
       Shaft diameter: 2mm

  • First remove the wiring to the electric motor then remove the original electric motor itself as described in part 1. Now insert the new electric motor into place and you will notice a problem:

    /images/blog/USB_grinder_2/contacts_issue.jpg
    /images/blog/USB_grinder_2/electric_tape_barrel.jpg

The connection terminals for the electric motor make contact with the aluminium washer that sits in the barrel area for the motor, so just like in the photo to the right simple use a small piece of electrical tape and work it around the washer folding it over each side (it will take a little while seeing as it won't stick too it)

Once you have confirmed the terminals no longer make contact with the washer you can remove the motor again so you can wire the whole thing up smile

    /images/blog/USB_grinder_2/inside_solder_job.jpg

Notice I only solder on the inside of the contact terminals keeping mind the motor just fit as standard.

    /images/blog/USB_grinder_2/completed_circuit.jpg

Now the motor is connected you can house it back in the barrel as shown here making sure that the contacts do not make any connection with the washer.

Now your done! laugh screw all the barrel pieces back together followed by screwing the grinder blade back into place leaving nothing to do but test it out toungue

    A little before and after:

    /images/blog/USB_grinder_2/weed_after.jpg

the grinder whizzed away like the weed wasn't even in there laugh

So for a couple of quid and a bit of re-soldering you too can make your electric grinder that much better smile
