Mimo USB monitors, How-to: Rail / Wall Mount them!
Last November I reviewed the Mimo UM-730 (Mimo 730 review found here). It's an excellent USB powered and ran monitor providing an extra 800*480 of desktop area instantly. Now I have a Mimo UM-720s which is a touch screen version but again still only USB connected and powered.
Now these screens have become a part of my daily use but are eating my desk space up. I finally got fed-up and decided to try buy some wall mounts for them but there are none and short of using super glue to stick it too the wall it required something a little more custom.
Items I used:
10 M3*15MM bolts+nuts
12 M3 locking washers
12 M3 regular washers
2 * wall speaker mounts (Rated to hold 5KG each although not needed)
1 * 3MM metal drill bit
Additional items shown are used to mount it too my desk, this will vary per your own set-up.
Taking the Mimo apart:
You will need:
2MM cross-head precision screw driver.
Small flat as possible Philips screw driver.
Needle nose pliers.
Taking the Mimo apart varies from model to model, However one thing remains the same. Each Mimo has 4 rubber pads either on the front of the screen or on the rear, 1 in each corner. These rubber pads can be pulled out using the Needle nose pliers revealing 4 tiny screws.
There may be a small layer of glue covering the nut which you can simply scrape off. Now using the 2MM screw driver remove all 4 screws CAREFULLY, these are VERY small screws if you round the heads then you will be forced to force the monitor cover off.
Once the screws are removed the 2 cover parts of the monitor clip together, so slide the small Philips screw driver into any part you want and carefully twist the driver until the side pops open, Use this technique all round the monitor until eventually the 2 sides will seperate.
The internals are all screwed in using the same 2MM cross-head driver, Where abouts you wish to place the speaker mounts on the back is upto yourself.
Remember to use electricians tape over the top of the bolts you use on the inside of the monitor!
I've placed each mount on my own so the monitors sit level from bottom up when up in the air. I used locking washers on the outside of the case to ensure the bolts never work there way loose.
I used a 1 meter piece of aluminium (20MM wide by 2MM thick), Cutting a single piece to bolt both monitors too, Then a simple piece bent at the bottom into a L shape which creates the upright mount. Using the 3MM drill piece and the same M3 bolts with locking washers to bring the whole thing together. All that's left is to bolt the frame work too the desk
As you can see the result is the 2 Mimo monitors suspended 1 foot off my desk
Giving me all my desk space back as no base plates are needed!
Enjoy
